Application Monitor/Restart
A mid-sized government contractor uses Deltek as its core system for cost allocation and management. The contractor’s employees were required to log onto the system on a weekly basis and enter their time spent on specific projects, so the contractor could appropriately allocate and bill against project contracts.
A pattern developed where an overwhelming number of employees performed their time administration duties over the weekend. During peak times, when many employees were logged onto the system, the system would frequently lock up. Subsequently, hundreds of employee calls would flood the call center. As a result, two highly paid technical specialists had to be available to handle those calls all weekend at overtime rates. The specialists were responsible for manually stopping and restarting the application and verifying that each account was accessible. In addition to the cost of the technical and call center staffs, the contractor often had to delay billing for a day or two because of the weekend problems.
The government contractor utilized Optinuity’s technology to implement an Autonomic Policy to continuously monitor this application for active the presence of certain known processes. When the policy determined that these expected processes were not present, it initiated a controlled shutdown and restart of the entire system.
